Today is a tragically historic moment in time where the advancement that America has made throughout history towards equality for all has taken a significant step backward with the Supreme Court vote to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision on abortion rights. This decision will have immense consequences for the communities most impacted by injustice to achieve reproductive justice for all people and families—especially those in Black, Brown, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, and under-resourced communities.
For more than 30 years, EverThrive Illinois has been advancing the health and safety of Illinoisans by supporting access to quality health care and providing resources to achieve health equity.
The severity of this decision restricts women in certain states’ access to health care. Fortunately, in Illinois, abortion will remain legal. According to ACLU IL, “You have the fundamental right to make decisions about your reproductive health care. You have that right regardless of age, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, sexual behavior, class, immigration status, race, ethnicity, language ability, or disability status. You also have that fundamental right even if you are in State custody, control, or supervision, including in jail, prison, or under DCFS custody.
You have the right to keep your abortion confidential regardless of your age.
If you are under 18, a clinic is not required by law to contact a parent or legal guardian if you are seeking abortion care services. Who you tell about your abortion is entirely up to you.
Illinois Medicaid and most private health insurance plans are required to cover abortion care. If you have an Illinois-based private insurance plan, use this chart to see if abortion care is covered. There are also private organizations that may be able to help you with abortion costs. Some clinics may also provide financial assistance.”
We continue to strive to affirm and center the experiences and voices of the communities to protect and expand access to abortion and contraceptive care throughout Illinois. EverThrive is committed to ensuring people from communities most impacted by injustice have the access, resources, health care, and choice to create and sustain healthy families on their own terms.
Abortion care is health care. Health care is a human right, and everyone should have the right to choose if, when, and how to parent. The fight continues!
