The CHAT Program: Transforming a School-Based Sexual Health Initiative
Sarah Parchem, MPH, Program Director, Bureau of Maternal, Infant, Child, and Adolescent Health (MICAH), Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH)
Alyssa Gale, MPH, Program Manager, Planned Parenthood of Illinois
The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH), in partnership with Chicago Public Schools and Planned Parenthood of Illinois, brings the CHAT Program to CPS high schools, local colleges, and youth-serving community based organizations. CHAT provides onsite sexual health education, confidential STI screening, a one-on-one health educator meeting, and linkage to care services.
In 2015, CDPH was awarded a rigorous evaluation grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Adolescent Health to determine the impact of the CHAT Program. Through this grant, the CHAT Program was re-imagined using a human centered design approach and input directly from youth.
