fiveSMART™ Steps to a Healthy Child: A New Healthy Lifestyle Message
Elizabeth Gonzalez, MPH, CHES, Health Educator, Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children (CLOCC)
Katelyn Kanwischer, MS, Early Childhood Programs Manager, Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children (CLOCC)
The need for promoting a healthy weight begins at the earliest stages; however, there is a gap in educational resources for prenatal women and young children. CLOCC’s new message, fiveSMART focuses on three different stages: pregnancy, infancy (0-12 months), and toddlerhood (1-3 years). fiveSMART is grounded in the best available research to support and guide families on steps to follow for a healthy lifestyle. The “SMART” acronym stands for Sleep, Meals and snacks, Activity, Role modeling and Responsiveness, and Things to avoid.
