On February 9th, President Obama released his administration’s final budget proposal, calling once again for strengthened maternal and child health programs. Importantly, President Obama’s budget proposal includes:
- Two additional years of mandatory funding (beyond the current 2017 expiration dates) for Community Health Centers and the Children’s Health Insurance Program;
- Significantly increased funding for the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) Program;
- Sufficient funding to meet the anticipated 8.1 low income women, infants, and children anticipated to participate in Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program in Fiscal Year 2017
While the President’s budget provides a helpful outline of his administration’s priorities and anti-poverty initiatives, it is up to both the United States House of Representatives and Senate to develop and pass legislation that establish actual funding levels for federal programs. EverThrive Illinois will be working closely with the Illinois Congressional delegation in the coming weeks and months to prioritize federal investments, such as the programs mentioned above, that nurture and support Illinois families.
