Chairperson - George R. Smith, Jr. has over twenty years of experience in public health, community engagement, social services and non-profit management. He currently serves as the grant coordinator for Chicago State University’s Partnership to STEP UP in Health Careers Program.
Dr. Smith has a strong passion for addressing racial disparities in health and is vehement about increasing the number of unrepresented minorities in the health science professions. His current research interests include spirituality/religious beliefs and its effect on health behaviors and health outcomes, ethical issues related to research involving urban populations, psycho-social determinants of infant mortality among African Americans, socio-cultural determinants of health and the organizational leadership style of health institutions serving underserved and underinsured populations.With a strong commitment to community service, George is actively involved withseveral civic, religious and philanthropic associations and societies.
George is a native of Chicago and earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a Master of Public Health from the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health and a Doctor of Education from Argosy University at Chicago.
