It’s been 30 days since Congress let the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) funding expire. Each day that passes without Congressional funding creates uncertainty of access to health care for millions of children and their families. Over 325,000 children are at risk in Illinois, alone.
Weeks ago, the House Energy and Commerce Committee passed a bill (HR 3921 – Healthy Kids Act) that would fund CHIP, but only through damaging offsets (i.e., funding sources) that would undermine Medicaid. This week, the House will bring this dangerous bill to the floor for a vote. CHIP is crucial, and funding it quickly is important, but the House must return to bipartisan negotiations to find less damaging offsets.
We must be loud and clear that children deserve a clean extension of CHIP with bipartisan agreement on both policy and funding.
Call your representative at (202) 224-3121 NOW and urge them to renew CHIP funding without jeopardizing other essential programs that keep children - and their families - covered.
CHIP is vital to the health and wellness of women, children and their families. We MUST unite our voices to reinforce the importance of extending the CHIP program with bipartisan support during this critical time. Children cannot wait.
You can also include your organization in this sign on letter, urging Illinois the congressional delegation to reauthorize these vital programs immediately.
